TEL AVIV, Israel - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said diplomatic efforts to resolve the standoff with
Iran over its nuclear program are "working."
Gates made the comments at a news conference with his Israeli counterpart, Amir Peretz.
Both the U.S. and Israel accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons — a charge Iran denies. The U.S. has been leading efforts at the United Nations to impose sanctions on Iran. Gates said the diplomatic efforts should be given a chance to succeed.
